First alert smoke detector blinking red light

Just installed three smoke detectors and they appear to be connected to the base station and I am getting the alerts while in test mode. My question is, the documentation that came with the detectors says that the red light on the detector should blink once every minute if the detector is operating properly. What are others seeing as far as the time interval between the red light flashing once indicating proper function?

Is this a sign of something that may not be quite right with the detectors, as the documentation says it should be flashing red about once a minute? Thank you for posting! Regarding the red flashing once per minute indicating Normal Operation, the manual is referring to when it is powered on, after it is tested, or after an alarm is complete.

The once a minute red flash stated in the manual is correct, but it only lasts for 5 minutes. Then it will switch to a red flash once every 5 minutes to indicate Normal Operation.

Twofold law of love

The manual doesn't go into detail on this, so we understand your question here. But from your description, your Smoke Detectors are working perfectly! Don't you think the manual should state this? I just received a smoke today and was perplexed by this very subject. Do digitally typeset words in a manual really cost that much that it helps the company's bottom line by omitting them?

I think someone at Simplisafe should at least go through the instruction sheets for each alarm item, like smoke detectors, sirens, etc, and see if there are any omissions in the instructions that need to be inserted. The omissions like the operation of the smoke detectors, and CO detector where the test button is not even clearly illustrated on the instruction sheet should be added to a FAQ on this website at a minimum. The ideal situation of course, would be to reprint the instruction sheet that comes with the item with the corrections, or at least add another sheet in the box with the additional information.

This shows professionalism and a concern for not having the customer questioning the instructions, or becoming confused when installing the system. A simple solution that could be easily and cheaply implemented and would stop many of these complaints on this forum.

My new smoke just got set off by steam from the shower I will need to tweak it's location. However, the detector only beeped intermittently a few times and stopped when I shut off the shower.

Thanks for writing in! We'd be happy to help you with any questions you may have about your alarm, or help you troubleshoot this. Please give us a call! Thanks Kelly, I moved the detector further from the bathroom door and no more problems.

Could you please clarify though my above comment -- is there in effect a "pre-alarm" where the detector will beep but not trigger the base station and cause the monitoring station to dispatch fire? That's what seemed to be happening here. I will be buying aerosol test spray to fully functionally test the detector before I buy more. I would recommend giving us a call so we can best clarify and help you with this issue! Please give us a call. Why doesn't my alarm sound when I push the test button?

They tend to be close to the corners where ceilings and walls meet. Ionized alarms and photoelectric technology alarms work slightly differently. Ionization technology tends to be better for detecting small particles, which are common in flaming fires. Photoelectric technology is generally better for large particles, like the kind you get in a smoldering fire. Both types generally warn you if they aren't working properly.

They chirp, or go-off for no apparent reason.

Even hard-wired alarms can run into battery power problems, because they have backup batteries in them. Check the red light emitting diode LED on the face of the unit. It flashes in patterns depending on the event the device wants to report. If the red LED flashes once a minute and the device chirps once a minute, it's telling you the battery is low or missing.

Check the LED again. If the red LED flashes rapidly and the horn pattern is three beeps followed by a pause, and then three further beeps followed by a pause, then the alarm has sounded.

The unit with the rapidly flashing LED and the horn is the one that triggered the alarm, false or not. This condition requires your attention, don't ignore it. Verify it's a false alarm and not an actual fire. Clean the unit if you experience continual false alarms. You can also try relocating the alarm. Avoid air streams near kitchens; keep it at least twenty feet from furnaces and water heaters.

Keep the alarm away from very damp or humid areas like near bathrooms, and away from dusty, dirty or greasy areas, and also away from drafty areas. Make sure power is supplied to the unit. Hold it down and verify the horn sounds. As with hardwired units, NFPA states that up to 18 total units can be interconnected RF or hardwired with a maximum of 12 of those being smoke alarms and the balance carbon monoxide alarms.

This eliminates manual dip switch programming saving confusion and time when installing.

Insert 2 AA batteries. Release button after alarm responds. If more than two minutes pass, the green power LED will stop blinking. Simply open the battery drawer of the second detector and repeat steps 1 through 3. Insert the batteries into the battery drawer of the next detector. Press and hold the test button and then close the battery drawer. Once you hear the unit chirp, release the test button. Photoelectric sensor technology is more nuisance resistant around kitchens and bathrooms, which traditionally are more prone to nuisance alarms from cooking smoke and steam from showers.

Some areas of the country require photoelectric alarms near high nuisance areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Low Battery Silence can temporarily silence the low battery chirp for up to eight hours before replacing the battery. This is a key feature when the low battery chirp begins in the middle of the night and you do not have any replacement batteries. This includes smoke alarms and integrated smoke and CO alarms, including the battery operated alarms and the hardwired alarms with battery backup.

Why does my smoke detector go off when I install a battery or turn on the AC power? It is normal for the smoke alarms to go off and sound briefly up to seconds when you install a new battery or they are powered up. If the alarm continues to go off and no smoke is present, the cause may be:.

The output from the sensor is the result of input from the comparator.

The output of the sensor will be compared with a predetermined reference voltage. If cigarette smoke is not detected, the brightness of the comparator will be high, whereas if smoke is detected, the voltage of the comparator will be low.

Thus, smoke detector blinking red is not the alert, but the beep is the alarming sign. This alarming sign is actually come out from the comparator. The output of the comparator is the input of the microcontroller circuit, where the microcontroller functions as an output controller. The health and safety of our valued customers and employees is our top priority.
